Messenger boys played an important role in communications in the financial district. This ticket, still intact, is for the messengers department of the New York Stock Exchange.

The messengers of the American District Telegraph Company, a division of Western Union, are shown in a gathering on the steps of the Sub-Treasury. Their bicycles carry the company name.

Relying on horse-drawn transportation resulted in an inevitable by-product. To deal with the problem, the city’s street cleaning department was organized with crisp efficiency by Col. George E. Waring Jr., who had gained his rank during the Civil War. Workers were known as White Wings, and to encourage esprit de corps, Colonel Waring had them march in an annual parade on Fifth Avenue. In this view from 1899, a White Wing is at work in the middle of Wall Street, which is decorated for a patriotic occasion. He is wearing the requisite white uniform and is wielding the basic tool of his trade—a broom. His wheeled refuse receptacle is nearby. While the White Wings are no longer a part of city life, a cynic might argue that cleaning up the by-product on Wall Street is a task that never quite ends.
